This year’s theme is childhood toys. I remember toys from my childhood. Legos, stuffed animals, and a rubber alligator that I really loved. Don’t judge, I live in Florida… I also remember toys my daughter had growing up. She loved this one little fairy thing that you put on a stand and it spun up in the air. It was pretty cool and glittery! But toys are sometimes more than fond memories to autistic children. They can be vital.
A good friend of mine has a son who is autistic, and we spoke recently about his experiences. Most of her sons issues were sensory, so they had a lot of toys that vibrated or played music. She said, “He loved toys that he could rock and flip his arms/hands to. If it was a vibration toy he would hold it against his face or chest to feel the motion.” He also loved toys with various textures, and he loved those holiday novelties – you know the ones…Dancing Santa or that gorilla with the big heart that danced and played music. Some children with autism prefer quiet, but her son loves noise as long as he can control it, because his preference depends on his mood.
He’s an amazing kid. He’s super smart and has a giant-sized heart. A lot of how well he’s doing is a direct result of his mom and how she’s paid attention to his needs – every detail – including his toys.
I’m so pleased to be doing this blog this year for my friend, her son, and so many others.
