My characters are hi-jacking my brain!

I just finished editing my first novel, Summer Blood, and I’m discovering that the characters are not finished with me! I can’t stop thinking about them. When I drive to work in the morning, they start having conversations and doing things… I think that means I need a sequel… hmm.

It is an odd sensation. I thought I would be starting a new project by now, but I can’t let these guys go yet. Their story isn’t finished.

Summer Blood is about two wicked and powerful vampires that find love and their humanity when they kidnap a strangely attractive human – until their makers step in and change everything!

Gwinafel O’Dale is a sexy, flirty, and very tough vampire. She kicks ass or kisses it on her own whim. She meets Tobia. He’s the broody dark one that hates himself. Their relationship causes them to grow up a bit. She finds she can make a commitment past a few hours and he learns he doesn’t have to cast a gloomy shadow over everything in his life. Then they meet Matthew.

Matthew is an enigma. Gwinafel is drawn to him in a supernatural way…

That’s all I get to tell you!! I hate spoilers! But, I hope you’ll be interested in finding out more about these characters from the Desolate Incubus series. Summer Blood will be the 2nd installment. I’m going to release Blood Pact, The Desolate Incubus Histories first.

I had to cut a lot of juicy material out of Summer Blood, and it will end up in Blood Pact. Yes, I do mean juicy!

So, I’m excited about these characters! I hope others will be too… and I hope I can write enough about them so they’ll get out of my head.

Read this one yet?

I recently finished reading Chimera by Rob Thurman. It was a 5 star book on a 4 star scale, and if you haven’t read it you should.

I find it difficult to give a good summary of Rob Thurman’s books because they all have such incredible plot twists and surprise endings. Unlike some books I’ve read, Thurman’s surprise endings are credible and they work because she builds them up unbeknownst to the reader throughout the entire novel. That makes it very difficult to summarize without spoilers and I hate spoilers. But, I’ll give it a try…

Two sons of a Russian mob boss are riding their horses on the beach in Miami when they are attacked. The older boy, Stefan, falls and is pinned under his horse as he watches his brother’s kidnapping. Stefan spends the rest of his life searching for his brother, Lukas. Finally, he succeeds. This is where it starts getting interesting! Lukas has changed. He doesn’t remember Stefan, he goes by the name Michael, and he has a special power (as in supernatural power). He has been a victim of biological and genetic experimentation!

I can’t give any more of the plot without running into spoilers. I can tell you that Stefan and Lukas/Michael are fabulous characters that the reader will want to care about. Stefan is head strong, confident, but never fools himself about who and what he is and what his capabilities are. He tries to understand all the risks before taking a chance, but will take that chance anyway if it means saving his family. He has a very strong sense of family. Lukas/Michael spends his time in this book discovering who he is and becoming a teenage boy. Despite all of the horrors that have happened in his life, he remains true of heart. With Stefan’s help, he learns what it means to be family.

Together Stefan and Lukas/Michael drive the story and provide interesting and fun reading. Now, I can’t wait to find out what the heroes do in the sequel, Basilisk.

In search of Trailers

So, I have content, a story, nearly completed. What next? I’m starting to think about some of the marketing aspects of writing. What do I need to do to promote the book?

I started looking at other writers’ websites, blogs, book covers and trailers. Yes, trailers. Authors are now making video trailers for their books. I’ve seen some really good ones out there too. I’ll post some of my fav’s (their books are awesome also!):

So, that kind of gives a brief idea of some great video trailers, and gives me a high bar to measure up to! (Kudos ladies!)

So, I’ll be thinking about what I can do for a trailer over the next few months (wish me luck). I need to have good images that represent my story. I also need great music that has inspired me while writing. Then, I need some text to explain my story without giving too much away, but enticing the public to read my book.

This is going to be a fun challenge!

I have sales!! Woot!

Woot! It really isn’t much, but the fact that I have sales is really exciting! It means that there are a few people out there that actually purchased my writing for the first time ever AND it is more than just my family!

good reading = good writing

I’m also going to share the latest awesome book I’ve read, Blood Song by Cat Adams. This was a fast read. I read the book in a day and a half and I cannot wait for the sequel. The book is about a tough body-guard who is half turned into a vampire (yes only 1/2 way!) It is partially a mystery to find out who did

this to her and why, part kick ass vampire book, and there is a nice little surprise twist at the end leaving the reading drooling for the sequel. The author’s style of writing is easy flowing, easy to read, and gets your attention quick and keeps it. I highly recommend it and rate it 4 1/2 out of 5 stars. I have to take off 1/2 a point because she had so many characters in the book that I lost track a couple of times. I had to say, “Who? Who was that?” a couple of times. Otherwise, excellent read!

So, these are the awesome books that I’ve been reading lately. You can enjoy them to and hopefully, see their influence positively reflecting in my writing.

Flexing those muscles!

Recently, I’ve been on a dual quest of muscle flexing! I’ve been on a physical exercise program for the last 6 weeks that has me been working out a lot more, but I’ve also been on writing quest as well. I’ve really been flexing that writing muscle. I’ve been hammering out my novel, but also working on a few other things. I have been really trying to write even more these past six weeks, and have implemented more specific deadlines. At the same time, I’ve been stepping it up each week in my physical work out.

I made the connection on the track yesterday. I jogged for the first time! Woot! While doing so, I realized that I had also been working out my writing skills. Even while on the track, I’ve been thinking about my novel. There’s nothing like killing two birds with one stone (pardon the cliché!)

It won’t be long now before I’m not only a successful novelist, but also a skinny one!!!

book trailers are awesome

I’ve been watching a lot of book trailers lately. They are like movie trailers only for books and they are shorter. I’m going to make one for the novel I’m working on, so looking at a lot of trailers is a good idea!!

So, here is a trailer for an upcoming book for an author I particularly like. I adore the trailer and hope I can come up with something half as good. So, watch it and see what you think!

I have to note also, that Maggie Stiefvater is running a contest for people who post her trailer – so I have a dual purpose! I want in the contest. But, also, the trailer is really neat!! She recorded the music herself and drew the animation. She is so talented. I definitely jealous!

Facing the Challenges

I started writing this blog to document and share my experiences with writing/publishing. So, I thought I’d take a minute or two to hash out some of the challenges I’m dealing with at this stage…

One of the most difficult and challenging parts of writing fiction is coming up with the names for my characters. I want the names to be appropriate to the character. The name has to fit. If I have the wrong name, it doesn’t work well. Sometimes it is very difficult. Sometimes it comes easy. It is also a lot of fun. It is part of creating that character. What is that person like? What are their idiosyncracies? What makes that person who that person is? There are times when that is really hard, especially when that person is an alien or is alien like. It is also difficult when you try to name someone within a historic context. If this character comes from ancient Ireland, they can’t be named Fred, right?!

The other big challenge hitting me right now is getting stuck on little things. I keep getting stopped flat by small things that might not even matter, but I get so hung up on them, that I can’t move forward. This is what I was stuck on this week:

*A different word for canteen.
*Where did I put my notes on a different story entirely than the one I’m trying to work on.
*I needed to buy a new cushion for my chair in my office where I write

Seems like small things, but I’ve wasted a long of time on these things! Gave up on the thesaurus problem, finally found my notes, and bought a seat cushion (on sale at Kohls!) So, now I’m ready to write… what am I working on today?

I need to do some yoga and focus!!

Another step in the journey

I started writing this blog to document my journey into professional writing. So, my first e-book has been published. Yeah! But, that is just the first step. Now, I have to promote the book. (Don’t hesitate to share your ideas with me on promoting!)

One of the ways that I want to promote the book is to post a free short story on my website. The story I’ve been blogging about, Second Place, is going to be that story. Of course, I have to finish it first. I’m having a little mental block with it though. I blogged about the big mess up I had with it earlier, and since then I’ve been having trouble going back to it. I know it will be a lot of hard editing. I just need to suck it up, right!?

Then, hopefully, if they like it, they might want to buy the e-book. So, it is a win-win. I just hope it is interesting and entertaining. Besides that, Geddy is a bit stuck in my head right now and she’s keeping me from writing other things, like my second e-book which is looking like will be a short vampire novel. Vampires are in right now, and I’m hoping my spin will be well received. I have a plug for it already in the back of the e-book. Here’s the plug:

This is a great novel, really shaping up, but I have a lot of work to do on it still and can’t get to it until Second Place is finished.

This is an aggrevating step along the journey, but one I have to face.

“Sangchai’s motorcycle flew down the remains of an old paved Highway. The Astrograph meter in his System Interface/Protective Eyewear, that he called SIPE, displayed a red arrow pointing south. He slowed the bike to a stop and looked directly at the speck of red light in the bottom right side of his SIPE. Again, it demanded that he head south. The desert stretched as far as he could see, even with his SIPE on 2,000 magnify. Sagebrush, dry grass, different cactus strains, and the queer looking Joshua trees scantily covered the rubble and sand. Everything a dull green, brown and gray blended into the horizon of soft pink sky.

Sangchai did not want to drive across the harsh terrain. The Astrograph’s signal intensified and urged him to move. The tracker implanted in the palm of his right hand itched. He refused to acknowledge it and revved the throttle instead.”

He spotted a tiny path as he jerked his bike around. It slithered through the brush like a tiny garden snake and wound across the desert, slowly circling around cactus and Joshua trees as it crept wider in some places and almost non-existent in others. “I guess that’s where I’m going.” Only a tiny green lizard heard him and dashed out of his way as he picked up his feet and started toward the trail. He leaned forward on his bike as he gassed it, swerving past the bigger bushes that lined the decrepit highway. The Astrograph needle continued to flash steadily, assuring him that he found the correct path. It continued to guide him across the desert floor toward a small mountain chain barely peeking over the horizon.

The road twisted and turned and eventually began to climb toward the side of the mountain. He weaved his bike in and out along the path, avoiding as many rocks as possible. He lost his back tire to skids in the loose sand occasionally, but generally he made decent time, as he gained altitude within the mountain range.

He resented the flashing Astrograph telling him where to go. Smashing the damned SIPE would bring him great pleasure. Even as he thought about it, the tracker in his hand began to itch. Sangchai cursed under his breath and brought his thoughts back on track. His ability to concentrate kept him on task and had kept him alive for too long to give up or give in. He took a deep breath and focused to heighten his senses.”
