Query This?!!?

With my novel, Summer Blood, finally finished and sitting with my Alpha-Readers, I’ve decided to write a query letter to send out to potential agents. So, what goes in a query letter? How do I capture the attention of a good agent when I know 50,000,000+ other writers are trying to do the same thing? I have to stand out somehow, right?!

So, I google’d it. Of course…. I found a decent website right away. Thanks Google!

http://www.writing-world.com/basics/query.shtml

This site says there are five points to a good query. They are as follows:

  • The hook
  • The pitch
  • The body
  • The credentials
  • The close

I think the hook is the most important. If you don’t grab the agents attention in the first two sentences, I think you’re screwed. RIGHT~?!~!?

So, what’s my hook?  According to the writing-world website there are many ways to grab the agent’s attention, and many ways not to.  The “don’t do this” section seems pretty common sense to me. So, what about the “do this” part? None of these really work for me. These seem to be good ideas for non-fiction writing. But, I get the idea.

Be real, be interesting, but don’t come across like every other ding-dong writer begging for attention.  Then, the right agent will pick me!

Here’s my first paragraph:

Stories like True Blood and Twilight have been breathing life into the old classics making vampires HOT right now. My adult novel, Summer Blood, takes some elements of the classic vampire stories and adds new twists. These vampires leave blood, violence, and sex in their wake, and readers that love that will also love Summer Blood.

Does that grab your attention?

Death’s Hand – 5 stars!

Death’s Hand by SM Reine is packed full of action! I highly recommend it:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005WZKJN6/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=smre03-20&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399373&creativeASIN=B005WZKJN6

I’ve read previous books by this author such as Six Moon Summer and All Hallows Moon.  I have a review of Six Moon Summer on my website:

http://sjordanasble.com/Books__Reviews___Links.html

Her previous books were really good, and Death’s Hand promised to be as well. The writing is impecable and the author’s style is easy to read. This is a very talented author and her new book Death’s Hand only proves it further!

If you like hot chicks kicking ass then you are in for a treat. Reine tells a complete story in Death’s Hand while dropping hints of things to come. She doesn’t answer all the question and leaves possibilities out there. The heroine saves the day, but does she get to walk away with everything?

Her characters are compelling and interesting. You find yourself rooting for them as they push through the conflicts of the story line. Speaking of story line, WOW! This plot line is solid and interesting.  Take one ex-exoricist, one hunky witch of a partner, and a loyal best friend, then throw in the best friend’s hunky cousin and a couple of corpse-raising necromancers and see what you get… spicy, deadly fun!

I have sales!! Woot!

Woot! It really isn’t much, but the fact that I have sales is really exciting! It means that there are a few people out there that actually purchased my writing for the first time ever AND it is more than just my family!

In this new journey to become a real author, I published a book of seven short stories called, Stories to Fight Demons By. These are twisted/surreal stories about different kinds of demons; perfect for Halloween! You can purchase this on Amazon or B&N.  I’ll include the links here:

I hope those that purchased the book liked it. I don’t have any reviews on Amazon or B&N yet, but I’m hoping I’ll get one. So, if you purchased the book and are reading this… hint, hint!

I also have a teaser for my first novel posted on my website and a plug for it in the back of  Stories. Website:

So, this is truly another awesome step forward in my writing journey. I hope that others will celebrate with me – go ahead, raise your hand in the air and give me a “Woot!”

Flexing those muscles!

Recently, I’ve been on a dual quest of muscle flexing!  I’ve been on a physical exercise program for the last 6 weeks that has me been working out a lot more, but I’ve also been on writing quest as well. I’ve really been flexing that writing muscle. I’ve been hammering out my novel, but also working on a few other things. I have been really trying to write even more these past six weeks, and have implemented more specific deadlines. At the same time, I’ve been stepping it up each week in my physical work out.

I made the connection on the track yesterday. I jogged for the first time! Woot! While doing so, I realized that I had also been working out my writing skills. Even while on the track, I’ve been thinking about my novel. There’s nothing like killing two birds with one stone (pardon the cliché!)

It won’t be long now before I’m not only a successful novelist, but also a skinny one!!!

book trailers are awesome

I’ve been watching a lot of book trailers lately.  They are like movie trailers only for books and they are shorter.  I’m going to make one for the novel I’m working on, so looking at a lot of trailers is a good idea!!

So, here is a trailer for an upcoming book for an author I particularly like.  I adore the trailer and hope I can come up with something half as good.  So, watch it and see what you think!

I have to note also, that Maggie Stiefvater is running a contest for people who post her trailer – so I have a dual purpose! I want in the contest. But, also, the trailer is really neat!! She recorded the music herself and drew the animation. She is so talented. I definitely jealous!

Facing the Challenges

I started writing this blog to document and share my experiences with writing/publishing.  So, I thought I’d take a minute or two to hash out some of the challenges I’m dealing with at this stage…

One of the most difficult and challenging parts of writing fiction is coming up with the names for my characters. I want the names to be appropriate to the character. The name has to fit. If  I have the wrong name, it doesn’t work well. Sometimes it is very difficult. Sometimes it comes easy. It is also a lot of fun. It is part of creating that character. What is that person like? What are their idiosyncracies? What makes that person who that person is? There are times when that is really hard, especially when that person is an alien or is alien like. It is also difficult when you try to name someone within a historic context. If this character comes from ancient Ireland, they can’t be named Fred, right?!

The other big challenge hitting me right now is getting stuck on little things. I keep getting stopped flat by small things that might not even matter, but I get so hung up on them, that I can’t move forward.  This is what I was stuck on this week:

*A different word for canteen.
*Where did I put my notes on a different story entirely than the one I’m trying to work on.
*I needed to buy a new cushion for my chair in my office where I write

Seems like small things, but I’ve wasted a long of time on these things! Gave up on the thesaurus problem, finally found my notes, and bought a seat cushion (on sale at Kohls!) So, now I’m ready to write… what am I working on today?

I need to do some yoga and focus!!

It is coming… it is coming…

Really…. I’m doing the final edits for “Second Place” right now. This is the short about the hover craft racer. The rough draft is finally finished and it is in the final edit stages. So, that means I will be ready to publish very soon. This will be free to everyone on my website, so I hope everyone is excited. I know I am.

Peace, love, and hover-crafts!!! It’s coming!!!

Another step in the journey

I started writing this blog to document my journey into professional writing. So, my first e-book has been published. Yeah! But, that is just the first step. Now, I have to promote the book.  (Don’t hesitate to share your ideas with me on promoting!)

One of the ways that I want to promote the book is to post a free short story on my website.  The story I’ve been blogging about, Second Place, is going to be that story.  Of course, I have to finish it first.  I’m having a little mental block with it though. I blogged about the big mess up I had with it earlier, and since then I’ve been having trouble going back to it. I know it will be a lot of hard editing.  I just need to suck it up, right!?

Once I’m finished with Second Place, I’m going to put it on the website so everyone can read it. http://sjordanasble.com/

Then, hopefully, if they like it, they might want to buy the e-book.  So, it is a win-win.  I just hope it is interesting and entertaining.  Besides that, Geddy is a bit stuck in my head right now and she’s keeping me from writing other things, like my second e-book which is looking like will be a short vampire novel.  Vampires are in right now, and I’m hoping my spin will be well received. I have a plug for it already in the back of the e-book. Here’s the plug:

“Vampires are making a come back lately with the success of series like HBO’s True Blood, and SyFy’s Being Human, not to mention Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight Series. So, if you like Vampires, here are some real nasty ones for you. They try to be good… but…well… they’re vampires!  Get ready to check out what they are up to in my upcoming Desolute Incubus.”

This is a great novel, really shaping up, but I have a lot of work to do on it still and can’t get to it until Second Place is finished.

This is an aggrevating step along the journey, but one I have to face.

AAAHHH!! What have I done??

I have destroyed my story. Sometimes we try things that are different thinking, “Oh, that will be so cool.” Then, it turns out that it isn’t so cool.

I tried to write my story, Second Place, in first person and in present tense. It did not go so well. Maybe I just don’t have the discipline. I kept slipping back into normal third person, past tense. Now I have a story that is all over the place in perspective and tense. Maybe I should pick one thing to try at a time.  I think I over estimated and did too much.

This means edit, edit, edit, edit… OMG… but I really dig where the story is going. So, this means that I have to work on it a little more…

The trials and tribulations of the birth of a story…

Crazy Week

I can tell what kind of week I’ve been having by my blog stats! Yes, they are down because I’ve not been writing. Imagine that.

I have been working on other projects this week and my blog has suffered, and so has my writing. I was hoping to already have my short story, Second Place, posted to my website, but it is not finished.  So, this weekend I will work on it!  I have been working on it mentally and know exactly what Ms. Geddy is going to do… and I can’t wait to get it typed up so I can share it with all of you.  So, have just a little more patience with me.

I have also been working on getting the e-book published. It just might be out next week.  The book, Stories to Fight Demons By, is finished and sitting in the queue. I have made progress on the “behind the scenes” issues and I think we might be rolling next week! Yeah!  I think these short stories will be worth the wait!  So, hang in there.

Thanks again to everyone that has been checking in with me weekly or daily!  I hope that it will be worth it!
